Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to articulate the purpose and function of U.S. copyright in order to use copyrighted works ethically and legally, and recognize the copyright inherent in their own works.
  • Students will be able to identify the permissions given by various Creative Commons (CC) licenses in order to use CC-licensed work legally, and choose the appropriate CC license for their own work.
  • Students will be able to find (and cite) openly-licensed material appropriate to incorporate into their multimodal project in order to legally share their work, which is the product of a remix process.

Outline

  1. Introduction and Welcome (2 min.)
    1. Introduce yourself
    2. Explain how to ask questions after the session
  2. Class Content
    1. Copyright Basics (10 min)
      1. Describe the basics of copyright, including what constitutes a copyrightable work, the rights that copyright confers, how long copyright lasts, and the public domain
        1. If you are unfamiliar with these basics yourself, there are many resources you could consult – here is a short list
      2. Explain the difference between copyright and academic integrity
      3. Pause for questions – students often have some!
    2. Introduction to Creative Commons (15 – 20 min)
      1. Explain the value of Creative Commons licenses
      2. Describe each license component
        1. If you are unfamiliar with these basics yourself, see the content from the Creative Commons Certificate
      3. Have students complete Part 1 of the Google Form activity
      4. Make sure to go through the correct answers for the questions in Part 1 as a class; some students will need clarification
    3. Finding Appropriate Materials (15 min.)
      1. Describe how to properly give attribution using TASL (or, using a citation style, depending on the instructor’s preference)
      2. Provide an overview of a few places online to find openly licensed content (it can be helpful to focus on places to find images)
        1. Do at least one example search (I like to use cute baby animals for my example searches! Students are happy to give suggestions)
        2. Make sure to point out where the license can be found, as well as the other components of TASL
      3. Have students complete Part 2 of the Google Form activity
        1. When in person, it can be helpful to check in with each student as they complete the activity
      4. Report Out – optional (5 min)
        1. Ask students if there were any issues as they searched
        2. Invite questions
  3. Review and Wrap-up (1 min.)
    1. Remind students of your contact information
